25 Years of Care, Compassion, and Community: The Story of the K-Life Auxiliary

A Legacy of Service
For a quarter of a century, the K-Life Auxiliary — known for many years as the Killarney Memorial Ladies Auxiliary — has been a quiet but powerful force behind the scenes, raising funds, rallying community support, and enriching the lives of those who rely on K-Life’s services. What began as a small group of dedicated locals with a shared purpose has grown into one of the organisation’s most enduring and impactful support networks.
The Auxiliary was founded by Bernice Ragh, a well-known and respected figure in the district who brought her warmth, organisational skills, and hospitality experience to the role. Bernice’s leadership helped shape the group’s mission: to provide additional resources and support for the facility, beyond what regular funding could achieve. Her approach — always professional, always community-minded — set the standard for everything that followed.
Over the years, countless members have continued this legacy. Many joined after retiring, eager to contribute their time and energy to a cause that mattered deeply to the community. One such member is the current president, Margaret Armstrong, who joined in 2004 and has led the Auxiliary since 2011. Under her guidance, the group has gone from strength to strength.

Making a Tangible Difference
The Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts have had a direct and lasting impact on the care K-Life can provide. Their contributions have funded vital medical equipment such as ECG and ultrasound machines, medication trolleys, wheelchairs, oxygen concentrators, and blood pressure monitors. They’ve furnished rooms with new beds, mattresses, and dining chairs, and even provided practical comforts like heat bags and a barbecue for residents and staff.
What’s remarkable is not just the breadth of their support, but the consistency. Year after year, the Auxiliary has raised thousands of dollars through events and activities — a testament to their hard work and the generosity of the community.
The group’s fundraising calendar has become a fixture in the local social scene. Early Bonfire Nights at the Polocrosse Grounds were modest gatherings of locals, but over time they grew into a major community event attracting visitors from near and far. The Annual Bowls Day, raffles, and the popular Soup Kitchen have also become much-anticipated traditions, each one contributing significantly to the Auxiliary’s mission.

Looking Ahead
As the K-Life Auxiliary celebrates its 25th anniversary, its story is one of dedication, evolution, and unwavering community spirit. What began as a small circle of volunteers has become a cornerstone of K-Life’s success — ensuring that essential services continue to grow and adapt to meet the needs of the people they serve.
The heart of the Auxiliary’s work is summed up best by its long-serving members: it’s about love for the community, pride in service, and the belief that together, we can always do more.
