Many Hands, One Shared Achievement: K-Life at Jumpers and Jazz in July
K-Life’s 2026 Jumpers and Jazz in July tree jumper entry was much more than a colourful festival display. It was the result of residents, volunteers and staff bringing their individual skills, ideas and enthusiasm together to achieve a shared outcome.
Our entry, “The Sweetest Jam is Community - Where every ingredient belongs K-Life” celebrated connection, belonging, creativity and community. From the earliest ideas through to the final installation, everyone had an opportunity to contribute in a way that was meaningful to them.
Our K-Life crafters took on the role of Creative Directors, helping to guide the design and oversee the creation of the decorations. Residents contributed their time, creativity and knowledge, while volunteers and staff helped transform these ideas into a finished tree jumper. Some people crafted, some helped organise materials, some assisted with installation, and others provided encouragement and practical support.
The project also brought together creativity and music. An original K-Life song was written to complement the “The Sweetest Jam is Community - Where every ingredient belongs K-Life” theme, and our residents’ choir performed it for the Jumpers and Jazz judges in front of the completed tree. This gave residents another way to participate and proudly represent K-Life within the wider community.
The value of working towards a shared goal
Group projects provide more than a finished product. They create purpose, encourage conversation and give people a reason to come together regularly. Each person’s contribution becomes part of something larger, and everyone can see how their involvement helped achieve the final result.
Working towards the tree jumper encouraged residents, volunteers and staff to share ideas, solve problems and celebrate progress together. It created opportunities for people to use existing skills, learn from one another and form new connections.
The project also demonstrated that meaningful participation can take many forms. Not everyone needs to undertake the same task or contribute in the same way. One person may have the creative vision, another may enjoy making decorations, while someone else may prefer organising, singing or helping with installation. Every contribution has value.
Volunteers strengthen our community
Volunteers played an important role in bringing the project together. Their time, energy and willingness to help allowed residents’ ideas to develop into a community display that could be enjoyed by festival visitors.
Volunteerism is not only about completing tasks. It is about building relationships, sharing knowledge and helping people remain connected to their community. Volunteers bring different experiences and perspectives, while also creating additional opportunities for residents to participate in activities that are purposeful and visible beyond K-Life.
Our tree jumper receiving second prize in the Local Business category was a wonderful recognition of everyone’s work. However, the greatest success was the sense of pride, connection and achievement created along the way.
The finished tree represented far more than yarn and decorations. It represented many people working together, each contributing something different but equally important.
Thank you to our residents, volunteers, staff, choir members and everyone who supported K-Life’s Jumpers and Jazz in July entry. Your combined creativity and commitment showed what can happen when a group comes together with a shared purpose.
