Frocktober and Fabulous Friday for Ovarian Cancer Awareness
Caring for our Community

October brought women’s health into focus at K-Life, with Frocktober and our Fabulous Friday fashion parade encouraging conversations about ovarian cancer and the importance of making time for our health.
An initiative of the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, Frocktober encourages people to dress up throughout October to raise awareness and funds for ovarian cancer research. It is a creative way to start conversations about a disease whose symptoms can be difficult to recognise.
Our Fabulous Friday fashion parade, held in the Cedar Room on Friday 23 October, brought that message to our community. Thank you to everyone who dressed up, took part and helped raise awareness of this important cause.
Women’s health deserves attention all year round. Keeping up with recommended breast and cervical screening, discussing heart and bone health with your GP, and seeking support for changes in your physical or mental wellbeing are all part of caring for yourself.
At K-Life Medical Centre, Dr Catherine MacDonald’s Women’s Health Clinics offer support for perimenopause and menopause, abnormal periods and other gynaecological concerns. Appointments are also available for contraception advice, Mirena insertion and removal, antenatal care, and pregnancy and fertility planning.
New patients are welcome for women’s health appointments, with limited availability. These consultations focus on women’s health, and new patients return to their regular GP for other medical concerns.
Frocktober also carries an important reminder: there is currently no effective screening test for ovarian cancer, and a cervical screening test does not detect it. Knowing what is normal for your body and having unusual changes checked is important.
Symptoms can include persistent bloating, abdominal or pelvic pain, feeling full quickly, needing to urinate more often or urgently, changes in bowel habits and unexplained fatigue. These symptoms can have many causes, but if they are unusual for you or persist, see your GP without delay.
